Choosing a Cruise Line

Royal Caribbean or Celebrity? Same family, different sailing.

October 2026 6 min read

Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises are sister brands under the same parent company, Royal Caribbean Group. They share a loyalty-status match, many of the same home ports, and a reputation for well-run ships. But step aboard each one and the difference is immediate.

The simplest way to put it: Royal Caribbean is the great family cruise. Celebrity is a step above — the same reliability, delivered with more refinement and a calmer pace. Here is how to choose between them.

The Family Pick

Royal Caribbean

Best for: Families, multi-generational groups, first-time cruisers

The feel: Big, lively, packed with things to do

The Step Above

Celebrity Cruises

Best for: Couples, adults, travelers who want polish without stuffiness

The feel: Modern, design-led, relaxed and refined

01

Royal Caribbean: built for families

Royal Caribbean’s ships are some of the largest at sea, and they are designed so that nobody in the group gets bored. Kids and teens have their own supervised clubs through Adventure Ocean, while the decks are full of activities you simply won’t find on most other lines.

It is the line where a grandparent, a teenager and a toddler can all have a great day on the same ship — then meet up for dinner.

  • Signature activities on many ships: rock-climbing walls, surf simulators, waterslides and ice-skating shows.
  • Adventure Ocean kids and teen programs, sorted by age group.
  • Perfect Day at CocoCay, the line’s private island in the Bahamas, on many Caribbean itineraries.
  • Broadway-style shows, family-friendly dining and plenty of casual food options.
02

Celebrity Cruises: a step above

Celebrity sits in what the industry calls “modern luxury.” The ships are still large and well equipped, but the atmosphere is quieter, the design is more contemporary, and the focus shifts from activities to food, spa, and views.

Its newer Edge-series ships are known for features like the Magic Carpet, a cantilevered platform that moves up and down the side of the ship, and a Rooftop Garden. Dining is a real highlight, and there are fewer crowds around the pool.

  • Elevated dining, a strong wine program and specialty restaurants worth planning around.
  • Calmer pool decks and lounges — families do sail, but the mood leans adult.
  • The Retreat: a suite class with a private lounge, sundeck and dedicated restaurant.
  • More itineraries that linger in port longer, including Europe and the Greek Isles.
03

The refinement factor

If you have sailed Royal and loved the ship but wished it were a little calmer, Celebrity is the natural next step. You keep the familiar booking process and loyalty perks, and gain a more polished evening, a more considered menu and more space to simply sit and watch the sea.

And if you eventually want to go further still, the same group also owns Silversea, an ultra-luxury, small-ship line where most things are included in the fare.

04

How to choose

Ask who is coming and what a perfect sea day looks like to them.

  • Traveling with kids or a big group? Choose Royal Caribbean.
  • Celebrating as a couple, or want quiet sea days and a long dinner? Choose Celebrity.
  • First cruise and not sure? Royal is the easy, crowd-pleasing start; Celebrity is the one you graduate to.
  • Either way, compare cabin location and itinerary before price — they shape the trip more than anything else.

Whichever you choose, the packing is the same. Start with our Cabin, Embarkation and Port Day kits so the first afternoon on board is spent on deck, not hunting for an outlet.

Ship features, programs and itineraries vary by vessel and change over time — always confirm details with the cruise line before booking.
